Pictures of Babe

At my latest home on Dad's lap!

Babe's Story
Several years back a lady in Morgantown, WV named Carolyn Utt contacted me because she had seen an article in the paper about my Kanine Therapy Program. She had actually written me a very touching letter requesting a Therapy Dog to come and live with her. Just so happens, my good friend Elaine Calkins of Lost Creek, WV had a neighbor who had wanted to get rid of a Poodle puppy from a previous breeding. I had alreday taken possession of the dog when Carolyn contacted me, did health checks (he was full of whip worm - that I am still fighting today) and completed some basic obedience training. Paw Prints Veterinanry Clinic of Morgantown, WV (via Dr. Cinthia Seiler, DVM) donated the veterinary treatements (including exams and shots). And Pets Inn of Mannington, WV (Bessie Keener) donated some free groomings! Thanks folks!

The way Carolyn explained it, she had contacted Paws for a Cause and several other service dog organizations, and because she was somewhat bedridden due to her continuous battle with cancer, she was unable to let the dog outside on a daily basis. Instead, she proposed to set up a separate room where he could releive himself. She also need assistance in getting to and from the vets, groomer and grocery store. And she knew there would be times when she was in the hospital for extended periods of time where the dog would need to be kept by someone (and maybe even brought in for visits)!

So, my friend Brenda Powers (she adopted Sandy) and I went to visit Carolyn to personally check out her situation. Within minutes we both knew Babe was just the perfect dog for Carolyn. During his obedience training I had already seen how easily he adpated to new situations and new commands. Babe was such a special dog that I just knew he could also adapt to Carolyn's situation.

To make a long story short, Babe lived with Carolyn for nearly three years. During that time we had many veterinarian & grommers visits, and hospitals stays. And, between Brenda and I we always managed to make everything click. Any time Babe was not with us we knew he was truly serving mankind as a therapy dog by sitting along side Carolyn in her bed. After a devastating turn in Carolyn's cancer battle she left us from a Nursing Home. Babe was with her that very evening for their last visit.

Yes, Babe is truly a special dog in that we realized he was destined to serve mankind the rest of his life. Soon after his stay with Carolyn we found another unique situation via my friend Diane Brozik. Her mother and father-in-law (both having suffered major health problems) could benefit from Babe as well. So today Babe lives in Pennsylvania with them and is visited by Diane on a regular basis. We receive pictures once and a while and know he is doing fine!

Regardless, of where he is, Babe will always be my dog and when he is too old to serve as the truest kind of therapy that there is, he will come back to me to be cared for in his old age.

Pictures of Kandi

Standing ...

Sitting ...

Initial Posting
Kandi was found in Mannington, WV on January 9, 1995 right after a major snow storm.  She was trapped on a highway between 5-6' snow banks created by the snow plows.  We advertised for many months to find her orginal owner.  Believe it or not, we received no calls about her?

She resembles a Shetland Sheepdog; except she has the deep red color of an Irish Setter; and has demonstrated her herding instincts.  She is a great snake dog! (keeping everyone away from them).

She was spayed when I found her and this is what I contribute her "tubbiness" to.  She is extremely mature and loving. She would make someone a nice housepet.  She is crate trained as well as house broken.   She is current on her vaccinations.

Update
Well now, since finding Kandi (now 4 years have gone by), it seems she is yet another who will spend the rest of their life with me.   She is still tubby! But what a great dog!   Never a problem.  She is loved by all who stop and visit!  She sleeps by the living room door on her favorite pillow.  She gets brushed weekly and has the hair on her feet trimmed at least every other week.  Someone, somewhere should really be missing this dog ...

Binkie & Christopher

Initial Posting
After rescuing Binkie (formerly Barney) and Christopher (named after Christopher Reeve) I began writing letters to tell their story.   I also contacted several other organizations to secure funds to prosecute their enemy!  To read their entire story check out:  Newborn Puppies Dumped in a Plastic Bag - Left to Die.

Update
Well, as with most at Rainbow Rescue & Adoption, Binkie and Chrisptoher I believe have found their permanent homes.

After trying a spell at my Mom's, Binike was returned to me.   Unfortunatley, he managed to brake his leg at Mom's for $400 worth of repair.  And at the additinal cost of another $200 he broke it again!   He is somewhat neurotic to boot, so treatments were a challenge alone.  He is now with me, adopted by a Ridgeback named Betsy.

Christopher?  How shall I put this?  As my sister Karrie Dee says, "Christopher was sent to me by heaven!"   On a routine "socialization" trip to my sister's, Christopher was never returned to me.   I guess you could say it was love at first sight.   Not to fear, Karrie has sent me a life size poster picture that hangs as you walk into my kitchen!   YEAH HAW!   Thanks Sis!

Pictures of Fleaz

Initial Posting
I found Fleaz on April 14, 1995 driving home from work (going down the back side of the NASA building in Fairmont, WV.)  She was absolutely terrified of when I attempted to pick her up from under neath the guard rail.   She would have been by a car if I had not picked her up.   I named her Fleaz because she reminded me of a dog my Family and I tried to saved years ago when I was a child.   That dog was covered with fleas when we found her, and eventually died of sarcoptic manage. I don't know if we even had her long enough to take a picture?

Fleaz is a spayed female.  She resembles a Smooth-Coated Collie.   She was found in Fairmont, WV on April 14, 1995 as a very scared young puppy.  She has been to obedience school.  She is very loving and needs a large fenced in yard to play in.  She is approximately 2 1/2 year sold and gets along well with other dogs.   She is crate trained as well as housebroken.  And, she is current on her vaccinations.   Here are some of the letter templates I used in trying to find a home for her, you may find them useful!

Update
After repeated contacts with the Harrison County Humane Society for assistance in finding Fleaz a good home, her time eventually ran out.  One evening, totally unprovoked, Fleaz attacked an 8 year old Shar-Pei.  The injuries eventually led to the Shar-Pei's death.   Managed in the proper "new home" Fleaz would still be with us today.   Needless to say, we are very disappointed with the lack of help from the Harrison County Humane Society, and have never asked for their help again.

Pictures of MaryLou

Initial Posting
Two days before Christmas I found a small beige beagle-like dog on Locust Avenue in Fairmont, WV.   When I began my search, naturally I stopped at the local Humane Society to report that I found this dog and post a sign.  When I toured the facilty I noticed this one little basset-hound type dog, bridle in color, with the biggest, floppiest ears you have ever seen.  Well, my heart was struggling over this puppy.  So, on Christmas Eve after two sleepless nights, I went back to the pound and adopted little MaryLou!

Update
She now lives with my neighbor, Brenda Powers!  And, she is a tubby ol'e gal!  Fat and Sassy!  As you can see, Brenda takes good care of her!

Waiting for dinner!

Steph & Pepper say "Hi"!

Pepper's Story
Pepper was found as an abandoned young pregnant mother by my friend Steph and her family. She was taken in by the family and lived for 17 years. In her later years she actually moved in with Steph and I was able to particiapte in her care. She was really a very sweet little dog. We all miss her.
